v Friday night, January 5th: Annual post-holiday party and “Musical Showcase” night, this year featuring singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Gellman, teenage rock/blues/fusion sensation “The Dice,” “Twisted Goddess,” and “Special Ed and the Slow Learners” (see flyer). At Alfio’s; $10 cover charge for live entertainment, appetizers, punch, and door prizes.
v Wednesday night, January 10th: Dr. Bob Litman discusses the delivery of cutting-edge medical care and a “wellness” regimen within a group home setting.
v Wednesday night, January 24th: Susan Smith, from the Housing Opportunities Commission, and Abe Schuchman from Housing Unlimited discuss publicly and privately subsidized housing.
v Wednesday night, February 14th: A repeat performance by one of our most popular speakers, Dr. Adam Hedaya, addressing how diet, nutrition, supplements, vitamins, exercise, allergies, hormones, gastrointestinal quirks, etc., can all play a role in treating mental illness. The goal is to reduce or eliminate the load of toxic psychotropic drugs that a patient has to take. Anyone associated with the Beatniks gets a discounted initial consultation, as Dr. Adam kicks off his new practice!! Also that night, a special Valentine’s Day promotion for the popular “No Longer Lonely” singles’ Internet dating service especially for consumers. Anyone who signs up that night gets six months’ free service, when “No Longer Lonely” soon begins charging for its unique and upgraded service with a new Web site.
v Wednesday night, February 28th: The Beatniks’ excellent friends, Heidi Coons from Threshold Services, and Mark Foraker from St. Luke’s House, discuss fundraising and promotional techniques for grass-roots non-profits. Exec’s from struggling non-profits won’t want to miss this one!!
v Wednesday night, March 14th: First-ever NIMH Night at the Beatniks (see flyer). Dr. Carlos A. Zarate, MD, Chief of the Mood Disorders Research Unit and a clinical director, discusses “Bipolar Disorder: Current Knowledge & Future Directions.” Dr. Daniel R. Weinberger, MD, Director of the Genes, Cognition & Psychosis Program, discusses “How do Genes Cause Mental Illness?” In addition, recruiters from several NIMH clinical trials will be on hand to answer questions. Expect national media to be present; come early for best seating.
v Wednesday night, March 28th: Veteran psychiatrist Dr. Paul Chodoff—now in his nineyties--discusses “Fifty Years of Psychiatric Practice: an Overview.” In over half a century of practice, he’s seen it all; and wants to pass on some of his observations.
All dinners & events in this Winter Quarter are taking place at Alfio’s Trattoria—4515 Willard Avenue in Friendship Heights—starting promptly at 6:30 pm, with speakers starting at around 7:15 pm. This popular Italian restaurant is located three blocks west of Wisconsin Avenue and the Friendship Heights Metro stop on the Red Line. Great food at affordable prices, and free valet parking.
